The geographical indication is used in the case of goods having certain geographical origin and characteristic features. The place of the origin is a type of geographical indication that is used exclusively for products having a specific quality characteristic to the geographical environment.
How does the registration occur?
Registration of geographical indication, place of origin is carried out by the producer or manufacturer of the given geographical location. Due to registration, they get the right to use the given name. The place of origin may also be registered on the basis of consumer protection organization’s applications.
The right to use them is dependent on the registration of geographical indication or place of origin. In case of registering, they cannot be a subject of transfer, licensing or other proprietary right. Their illegal use is forbidden.
Who can use GI?
Only the group that has the right to file an application for registration of a geographical indication or place of origin shall carry out the production activity of the goods mentioned in the application, and the product created as a result of that activity shall comply with the RA Law on Geographical Indications.

Period of use
The protection of the geographical indication or place of origin will apply to the State Authorized Body of Armenia from the date of filing, without the time limit. The right to use is given for a period of ten years, but it can extend not more than ten years.
